FIRST GRADE WELCOME PACKET
2022-2023
HOMEWORK
It is recommended that first grade students set aside a minimum of 20 minutes per day for homework on a regularly scheduled basis (for example, 4:30 – 4:50 every day). During this period of time, we suggest that the students choose one or more of the following activities, depending on individual needs and assignments:
· read silently or orally
· practice using weekly vocabulary words in speaking and writing
· practice math facts (make flashcards; find problems to solve)
· complete school assignments (watch for papers that come home with “Please finish” or “樱花动漫work” written on them; these should be completed and returned to school)
· work on special projects or reports (you will receive information on criteria and due dates for all assigned projects)
· practice printing letters and numbers
· write a story or letter (to Grandma or a friend, for instance)
· I-Ready
The regular homework time is important to establish now, when your child is young. He or she will need your help in finding the best time for your household and in remembering to use the agreed-upon time each day.
SIGNED PAPERS
Parents are to sign the Standards Based Progress Report and return the packet of papers the next day.
BIRTHDAYS
Birthdays are a special time for everyone, especially first graders. You can send store-bought cupcakes to be enjoyed only during the student lunch time. You can also let them wear a birthday crown on their special day.
ABSENCES and TARDIES
Of course, it is very important for your child to be at school every day. Whenever your child does needs to be out for a whole day or part of a day, please send a note explaining the reason. The note can be from the doctor or dentist or a note from you. You can send it to me through email also. (Please bring your student back to school if they leave early for an appointment if possible).
School begins at 8:20 this year. Students are tardy at 8:36. It is a long walk down to our classroom, so if you bring your child to school in the morning, consider how much time it takes to get to our room and plan accordingly. I begin instructional time at 8:35, so your child misses out on instruction when they are late.
RULES
1. Follow directions
2. Stay in your seat or area
3. Raise your hand to speak
4. Keep your area neat
5. Keep hands and feet to yourself
6. Obey safety rules
***Students will help make the classroom rules during the first week of school, but they are usually pretty similar to these rules.
POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SYSTEM (PBS)
Students are rewarded with Dojo points when they are caught displaying exceptionally positive behavior. At the end of each week, students with 20 Dojo points can take a trip to the Treasure Box.
Transportation and Dismissal Policies
· Bus tags must be kept tied to bookbags.
· Car riders-All parents must go through the car line, please do not park and come inside to pick up your student. If you pick up your student early please note that early check out ends at 2:35.
Transportation changes will not be taken over the phone. Parents must send a written note if transportation will change just for a day. If you do not send a note your student will go home their regular way. If you do not send a note but still need to change the way your student goes home you must email the office at JohnsTe@boe.richmond.k12.ga.us (school secretary) no later than 12 noon. Again, no phone calls or text messages will be allowed for transportation changes because I will not have my phone during instructional time.
WE ARE GOING TO HAVE A GREAT YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
