VILS is the abbreviation of Verizon Innovative Learning Schools, a program that provides under-resourced middle school students with technology, internet access, and a STEM-focused curriculum. The program is a partnership between Verizon and Digital Promise, and has been running since 2012.
VILS programs offer the following to participating schools:- Devices: One-to-one devices for all students and teachers, with up to a four-year data plan
- Connectivity: 24-hour connectivity
- Professional development: Face-to-face and virtual training and support for teachers
- Coaching: A full-time VILS coach to support teaching and learning
- Collaboration: Opportunities to work with other schools and ITI Practitioner Schools
- STEM opportunities: Opportunities from Verizon partners to integrate more STEM into school
Research shows that VILS programs can lead to academic improvements, such as increased STEM proficiency, student engagement, and improved math and reading skills.
