COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course will serve as the third course in the Audio & Video Technology & Film pathway. It is designed to facilitate student-led projects under the guidance of the instructor. Students work cooperatively and independently in all phases of production. After taking AVTF 1, 2, and 3, students are expected to take an End-Of-Course Assessment (EOPA). EOPA information is available on Canvas. Course Prerequisite is AVTF 1 & 2.
COURSE FORMAT:
This elective class is a blended class, combining classroom instruction with online learning. Online learning will be delivered on Canvas. Both in class and home assignments are posted on Canvas. The class meets 2-3 times a week.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Students will be able to:
- Demonstrate employability skills required by business and industry.
- In an independent production setting, select and develop the direction of specialization for news, film, and graphics.
- Create portfolios to include a resume, letters of recommendations, references, a list of skill sets, and demo reel highlighting of the students’ skill sets.
- Demonstrate collaborating effectively in group media production.
- Describe and apply the principles of media law.
- Examine how related student organizations (SkillsUSA) are integral parts of career and technology education courses through leadership development, school and community service projects and competitive events.
GRADING POLICY:
The final grade for each student will be 90% of the semester's work and 10% of the final exam. The semester work grade will be determined by the following percentages:
60% Minor Grades (quizzes, labs, and other graded assignments)
40% Major Grades (unit tests, essays, research papers, project-based assignments, and other culminating assessments)
Grading Scale:
A = 100 – 90 B = 89 – 80 C = 79 - 75 D = 74-70 F = 69 and below
Methods of Assessment
Methods will vary depending on the learning outcome(s) to be measured. A rubric will be provided for most assignments.

SkillsUSA Membership:
Participating in SkillsUSA is great way for students to get additional hands-on experiences and earn extra credit. Through community server projects, fundraising, competitions and leadership building activities, SkillsUSA will help build your character, self-confidence, and communications skills. RCTCM’s chapter of SkillsUSA will empower you in becoming a leader of tomorrow. Full membership requires both in-class and out-of-class participation. SkillsUSA provides SkillsUSA members who actively participate for three years will earn a cord for graduation. Dues are $35.00. See Dr. Mukenge for more information.
Tutoring/Remediation
Available by appointment during lunch or after school. Students needing more time to edit are also invited to make an appointment.
Student Absence Policy
Students have three days after they return to make up any missed assignments or tests. After the third day, any assignments not submitted will be marked as missing. Students are responsible for getting any missed notes or assignments that were given during an absence. All assignments will be posted on Canvas.
Extra Credit Work
Because extra credit is built into some assignments, I usually don’t give additional extra credit work.
Cell Policy
Cell phone use is prohibited in classrooms. Phones must remain off or silent and completely out of view.
Academic Honesty Statement
Honesty and integrity are integral components of the academic process. Students are expected to be honest and ethical at all times in their pursuit of academic goals. Any student found in violation of the policy will ask to redo assignments.
Consequences for Inappropriate Behavior
- 1st offense, teacher will address the student
- Call Parent/Guardian and discuss the problem with student's 2nd offense.
- Conference with parent/guardian and student.

Students are not allowed to post their work on any websites without written permission. Students who post any footage that is recorded or edited in class without written permission, may automatically fail this course.
The use of the Internet is restricted for the purpose of the course. No games or music.
Water is the only beverage permitted in the classroom section of the room. Snacks are not permitted due to the technology in the classroom/lab.
Students can only use school-appropriate elements (topics, shots, music and etc.). Questionable material MUST be pre-approved. No nudity, offensive phrases and/or language (as deemed by instructors) will be videotaped or recorded using school equipment or materials. Extreme violence (simulated or real) involving weapons or firearms of any type (fake or real) cannot be videotaped or recorded on school grounds.
Video and Photography Release Statement
Students in this class will be recorded on video and photographed. Enrollment in this class constitutes the consent of all enrolled students and the consent of the parents or legal guardians of any minor children enrolled, to the future broadcast, publication or other use of videos or photographs at the sole discretion of the teacher and school administrators.
